There are about 400,000 kilometers of roads in Britain. The roads are divided between primary and secondary roads. These include:
A-roads or national roads: These are the main roads that run the length and breadth of England, Wales and Scotland. They all begin with A and then are numbered according to their location. The A1 heads north London, for example. A-roads are funded and managed by the Government. They can be single or dual carriageway
B-roads: are small roads that are maintained by local authorities. They all start with a B, and are numbered according to their location
